A song that you love from a band that has since broken up
“Invalid Litter Dept.” / At the Drive-In (2000)
At the Drive-In was a post-hardcore band (whatever that means) who made awesome music from 2001 – 2011. They reunited in 2012 for a couple festivals and there has been talk of another reunion this Spring. I don’t think any official dates have been given yet but if it is true, I am SUPER FREAKING PUMPED.
“Invalid Litter Dept.” is one of the most political songs I listen to. The lyrics tell the story of the infamous Ciudad Juarez murders in Mexico. Over a ten year period, hundreds of women vanished and/or were found murdered in the city. The song talks about the factory girls who vanished and the Mexican police did little to nothing in response. I’ve never been to seek out songs with political messages but I just love this. It makes me cry when I listen but I think it’s an important issue to bring awareness to and the band does it in a way that feels real, not like a ploy for positive publicity.
