Song Challenge Take 2: Day 18

A song you would consider part of the “soundtrack” of your life

“What You Wish For” / Guster (1999)

Talk about a song that applies to life. It’s no secret that I suffer from bouts of intense depression. When I don’t post for a while, I’m usually feeling a little blue and too distracted to share my thoughts with the world (or just Mom). Other times- like now- I am riding high on life, posting up daily.

No matter what’s going on in my personal life, “What You Wish For” is the perfect song for me. Just look at the journey that the narrator takes throughout the song:

Woke up today to everything grey
And all that I saw just kept goin on and on
Sweep all the pieces under the bed
Close all the curtains and cover my head
And what you wish for won’t come true
You aren’t surprised love, are you?
If this serenade is not what you want
It’s just how it is, it keeps goin on and on
Come out, come out where ever you are
Would you do it all over right from the start
And what you wish for won’t come true
You aren’t suprised love, are you?
So what you wish for won’t come true
You aren’t surprised love, are you?
Once had this dream, crashed down in Oz
Not black and white, but where the colors are
I never dreamed that I would let her go
And I will get what I deserve
Keep all the secrets under the bed
Open the curtains, forget what I said
And what you wished for could come true
You aren’t surprised love, are you?
So what you wished for could come true
You aren’t surprised love, are you?

It’s the story of my life. Depressed one day- dark, in the dumps, staying in bed all day- and optimistic the next- thinking dreams can come true and letting the sun shine in. When I’m feeling down it gives me hope that I can wake up one day and be in a better place too. When I’m feeling up and happy, it remind me how far I’ve come. I can’t think of a more fitting song to be a part of the soundtrack of my life.
