Childhood Halloween: Casper

I was obviously a weird kid because I grew up wanting to date Casper. Yes, date. A ghost. I wanted to date a ghost. I can almost guarantee that if you were an eight/nine year old girl in 1995 you would to, for that was the year that Casper was released.

PLOT

Teenage Kat moves with her father, a paranormal expert, to a haunted mansion in Maine. There she meets Casper, the friendly ghost who becomes her best friend.

WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH

Whipstaff Manor. Having lived in Maine from twenty years, I can tell you that most of the houses here do not look like this (sadly). This house has everything: spiral staircase, stained glass windows, antique furniture, a laboratory in the secret basement. I can’t even begin to tell you how much I want to take a ride to that basement, having a shave and my bow tie put on for me.

Amazing cameos, such as this one from Dan Akroyd. It makes me so happy when he comes on the scene. We also see Clint Eastwood, Rodney Dangerfield, and Mel Gibson. They may not seem that exciting now, but in 1995 they were all HUGE deals.

casperscaryStretch, Stinkie, and Fatso. Casper’s uncles lend the movie a dark edge that keeps it from being too saccharine. They are rude, disgusting, and unapologetic. They are also absolutely fascinating. I can’t help but wonder what their back stories are. How did they die? What did they look like as humans? Is it realistic for three brothers to die and all come back as ghosts? I NEED ANSWERS.

Casper is a great best friend. When kids are picking on Kat at school, he goes to her classroom and tries everyone’s shoe laces together. A little juvenile, but totally BFF stuff. He also makes breakfast, turns his head into a balloon to cheer Kat up, and flies her to the top of what I think is a lighthouse.

Best intro ever.

Kat gets to touch a ghost. Don’t you want to touch a ghost?

handsThe party scene at the end of the movie. My entire life I have been trying to have a Halloween party as epic as Kat’s. Her house is already truly creepy/fantastic, so no fake spider webs or cheesy plastic skeletons are needed. What seems to be the entire school shows up AND she has a great dress. Throw in dancing/floating with a hottie and you have a perfect party.

This is everything I wish for every Halloween.

Devon Sawa is at his absolute prettiest. I know that some people think it’s weird to call a boy/man pretty, but it is what it is. This movie marked the beginning of my intense crush on Devon. Those five minutes of screen time he received as human Casper led to dozens of pictures being plastered on my walls and a need to see every movie he has ever made. Yes, even The Boys’ Club and Around the Fire.

Prettiest boy on the block.

Prettiest boy on the block.

The absolute best scenes in the entire movie. And the answer has been and always will be yes.
